Clayborn – generative artificial intelligence becomes ceramic matter

Clayborn is born from the meeting of natural matter, digital research and generative artificial intelligence. Presented in 2023, the collection represents one of the earliest industrial applications of generative design to the development of a finished ceramic surface.

The project originates from the clays and stones of the Westerwald, digitised and used as the basis for generative models capable of creating new textures—not simple reproductions of nature, but original interpretations of matter. The process, developed with Digital Design and AImageLab at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, combines algorithmic generation with human design selection.

The result is a porcelain stoneware surface in which artificial intelligence enters directly into the finished product, transforming data, images and matter into a new ceramic language.

Alongside this research is Millerighe, the three-dimensional evolution of the collection, characterised by linear reliefs that enhance light, shadow and depth. Clayborn and Millerighe share the same colour palette and can be combined to create coordinated, dynamic and architectural surfaces.
