Appiani ceramic mosaic turns the small tessera into a true design system: its modularity makes it possible to create surfaces rich in rhythm, colour and detail, while the pattern of the grout joints becomes an integral part of the design. Correct installation and maintenance suited to the selected grouting system help preserve its appearance over time.

Guiding principle: the following guidance does not stem from any fragility of the mosaic; it is intended to complete the installation cycle correctly and enhance both the ceramic surface and the selected grouting system.
Phase 1 · Installation and grouting
Installation and grouting: choose a compatible system
The substrate, adhesive, mosaic and grout must be specified as a compatible system. Selection depends on the application, exposure to water or chemicals, the substrate and the requirements of the particular Appiani collection.
- Substrate preparation. Check stability, flatness, cleanliness, moisture and curing. Where necessary, design waterproofing, movement joints and construction details.
- Adhesive selection. Choose a tile adhesive suitable for the substrate, ceramic mosaic and service conditions. UNI EN 12004-1 classifies adhesives but does not replace installation design.
- Setting the mosaic. Use the prescribed trowel and adhesive thickness, avoid voids and adhesive filling the joints, and check sheet alignment and surface flatness.
- Grout selection. Choose cementitious or reaction-resin grout according to the project requirements. UNI EN 13888-1 describes their performance categories.
- Joint filling. Respect joint width, depth, mixing, working time and curing instructions; fill joints evenly using suitable tools.
- Cleaning during grouting. Remove excess material at the stage prescribed by the grout manufacturer, avoiding abrasive tools and damage to the joints.
- Final checks. After curing, inspect alignment, uniformity, sealants and any residues, then follow a compatible removal procedure.
Phase 2 · Post-installation
Post-installation cleaning: identify the residue first
After installation and grouting, select the cleaning method according to the nature of the residue and the compatibility of the mosaic, grout and adjacent materials. Acidic products are not universally suitable.

Regular maintenance removes dirt without forming films. Choose the procedure according to the ceramic finish, grout type and intensity of use.
Compatible neutral cleaner
For everyday cleaning, use a pH-neutral cleaner where compatible with the tile and grout, diluted as specified by its manufacturer. Use clean microfibre or non-abrasive equipment and rinse when directed.
- Remove loose grit before wet cleaning.
- Avoid overdosing cleaners and combining products.
- Clean grout lines without aggressive brushes.
- Adjust cleaning frequency to traffic, moisture and use.
Phase 4 · Targeted cleaning
Deep cleaning: match the chemistry to the dirt
Local stains and stubborn deposits require identification before treatment. Stronger chemicals do not necessarily clean better and may harm grout or nearby materials.

Phase 5 · Wet areas
Slip resistance: verify performance for each project
In swimming pools, showers and wellness areas, select surfaces based on documented performance and the intended application. An additional anti-slip treatment is not a routine installation step.
Performance assessment
UNI EN 16165:2021 specifies test methods for slip resistance of pedestrian surfaces; it does not assign an automatic rating to every Appiani mosaic. Review the relevant test reports and the requirements of the specific application.
Post-installation treatments should only be considered where necessary, compatible and validated by sample testing, including any impact on appearance, durability and maintenance.
Phase 6 · Optional treatments
Protective treatments: only when justified
Appiani ceramic mosaic does not automatically require sealers, waxes or impregnating treatments. Any additional treatment needs an application-specific compatibility assessment.
When to consider them
Check the ceramic finish, grout and exposure conditions. On glazed surfaces or in wet areas, an unsuitable coating may alter the appearance, cleanability or slip behaviour.
Do not apply protective products by default. Consult current technical data, test on an inconspicuous area and confirm a genuine maintenance benefit.
