Profile

Nature as a design language

Ronald van der Hilst is a Dutch artist, designer and landscape architect based in Antwerp. His practice moves across landscape, botany, art and design, interpreting the garden not as a static object but as a process in constant transformation. Nature, light, seasons, colour and material become elements of a design language developed in relation to place.

The tulip holds a central place in his work. For more than twenty-five years van der Hilst has studied its history, forms, movement and varieties, translating it into gardens, drawings, ceramics, glass and objects. The flower becomes a subject to observe, deconstruct and reinterpret, connecting the ephemeral dimension of nature with the permanence of the designed object.

This multidisciplinary research has led Ronald van der Hilst to develop landscape architecture and product design projects and to collaborate with international manufacturers and institutions. His work maintains a constant dialogue between botanical culture, craftsmanship, material and experimentation.

Heritage

Ronald van der Hilst × Ceramica Bardelli

From hand-painted 20×20 modules to contemporary Ceramic Wallpaper.

The collaboration between Ronald van der Hilst and Ceramica Bardelli belongs to the historic design heritage of the brand. In the collections developed over the years, the tulip — a central element in the designer’s research — was translated onto ceramic surfaces through hand decoration and modular composition.

Tuli-Art, Tuli-Charme, Tuli-Poni, Tuli-Pop and Tuli-Tuli interpreted the flower through tiles mainly in the 20×20 cm format, hand-painted or hand-decorated and combined into compositions capable of transforming the wall into a larger image. In Tuli-Art, for example, 96 modules measuring 20×20 cm formed a large ceramic panel; Tuli-Poni used compositions of 6, 18 or 24 elements. The surface emerged from the relationship between artistic gesture, repetition, module and craftsmanship.

In 2026 this dialogue is renewed through Tulipani, within the Atelier — Ceramica da Parati project. The aim is not to reproduce the archive, but to reinterpret its design philosophy through a new scale and new decorative tools.

The 20×20 module gives way to the 60×120 cm slab, used like a vertical page; historic hand decoration is joined by Stampa Digitale a Freddo con Deposito di Materia. Graphics, relief and engraving give the drawing depth and tactile presence, bringing Ronald van der Hilst’s botanical language into a contemporary concept of the wall.

Tuli-Charme and Tuli-Poni revive names and themes already present in the Ceramica Bardelli heritage, reinterpreting them through a new material grammar; Tuli-Pique extends the research towards an imaginary botanical landscape. The result preserves the original principle — the tulip as sign, rhythm and composition — translating it into the possibilities of contemporary ceramic decoration.
