Flauti & Flautini: a guide to tone-on-tone grout

|Gianmaria Bardelli

When a ceramic surface is defined by relief, the joint is not a secondary detail: it becomes part of the visual project together with colour, light and depth. For this reason, with Flauti & Flautini by Ceramica Vogue, grout selection can make a decisive contribution to the continuity of the surface.

To support architects, retailers and installers, Gruppo Bardelli has selected a series of tone-on-tone colour combinations between the collection shades and three different grouting technologies: Litokol Starlike Pro, Kerakoll Fugabella Color and Mapei Ultracolor Plus.

Why choose tone-on-tone grout for Flauti & Flautini

Flauti was conceived as a three-dimensional surface able to modulate light through concave, convex and flat elements. Flautini extends the project with the slimmer 2.5×20 cm format. In both versions, a joint colour close to the tile helps reduce the visual grid and lets relief, reflections and geometry define the wall.

Tone-on-tone grout is therefore particularly coherent when the aim is a continuous, refined and visually compact surface. A contrasting grout remains a valid design choice, but it creates a different effect by making the joint pattern more evident.

Three grouting technologies, one colour objective

The following combinations were selected first of all for their colour coherence. It is equally important, however, to distinguish between the technologies of the three products, because the final choice depends on more than colour alone.

Litokol Starlike Pro: epoxy grout

Starlike Pro is a decorative epoxy gel classified RG according to EN 13888. Epoxy technology is especially relevant when the colour project is combined with demanding requirements for stain, water, UV and chemical resistance. Its extensive palette also supports precise tone-on-tone specification.

Kerakoll Fugabella Color: resin-cement hybrid technology

Fugabella Color uses a hybrid resin-cement technology. It is therefore neither an epoxy grout nor a traditional cementitious grout: it was developed to combine colour uniformity and stability with workability close to that of cementitious grouts.

Mapei Ultracolor Plus: high-performance cementitious grout

Ultracolor Plus is an improved cementitious mortar classified CG2FWA according to EN 13888-1. It is a different technology, with fast setting and drying, reduced water absorption and high abrasion resistance.

A colour match should therefore not be interpreted as a universal technical specification: grout colour and grout technology are two separate choices, to be assessed together according to the environment and the performance required.

How to verify the match before installation

Digital selection is a useful reference, but the final colour should always be checked on the real material. Before grouting the entire surface, we recommend making a physical sample test, allowing the grout to dry completely and evaluating it under the actual lighting conditions of the space.

  • Compare the dry sample: grout can change in perceived colour while drying.
  • Evaluate the real lighting: daylight, artificial light temperature and reflections affect colour perception.
  • Consider the ceramic batch: slight variations are part of the nature of ceramic material.
  • Follow installation instructions: mixing, working time, cleaning and application differ according to the technology selected.
  • Pay attention to the relief: three-dimensional surfaces require careful cleaning to avoid residues in concave areas and along edges.

Epoxy, resin-cement or cementitious: how to choose

The choice depends on the intended use. In areas exposed to frequent cleaning, stains or specific hygiene requirements, an epoxy solution can offer particularly relevant performance. In other contexts, a resin-cement hybrid technology or a high-performance cementitious grout may effectively meet the project requirements.

For this reason, the decision should always consider intended use, substrate, environmental conditions and the grout manufacturer's technical instructions, in addition to colour matching.

The joint as part of the design

With Flauti & Flautini, the surface is created through the interaction of material, relief, colour and light. Grout is part of the same design system: when selected tone on tone, it can accompany the ceramic surface without interrupting its rhythm, reinforcing the visual continuity of the wall.
